Professor Andrew Thomposon

Dr Andrew Thompson is a Professor of Youth Mental Health and a Consultant Psychiatrist. He is medical lead of the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) at Orygen and is the academic lead for the national headspace Early Psychosis services as well as head of Psychosis Research at Orygen. He holds an honorary Associate Professor position at the University of Warwick in the UK.

Andrew completed his medical degree at the University of Oxford and a research MD at the University of London. He trained as a psychiatrist both the UK and Australia obtaining fellowships in both countries. He has worked in youth mental health, both clinically and as a researcher for over 20 years. He has received major research funding in Australia and the UK including for the development of a national network for early psychosis clinical research (AEPCC) which includes a major partnership of researchers, clinicians and lived experience.

Andrew’s academic interests include work into risk factors for developing psychosis and novel interventions to treat early or emerging psychosis as well as other mental health difficulties in young people including using technology such as virtual reality. He is also interested in defining and understanding predictors of clinical outcomes in early psychosis.
